Adapting to the future

Living with water: changing in response to climate change is the only option

We want to continue living and working in a safe and healthy Netherlands. Even now the climate is changing faster than expected. That can be done if we adapt in response to climate change. That means:

Two sluice gates in a barrier regulating the water level.

Investing more in water management

Landscape with a winding river, farmland with a tractor, and a city under construction in the background.

Adapting land use and water management with immediate effect

Hospital on raised ground, with a lower-lying house beside it.

Knowing what to do when there is extreme weather

Periodical evaluation

We need to intensify our efforts

Every six years, we review the progress of the Delta Programme. We call that the periodical evaluation. The 2027 evaluation shows that we need to intensify our approach to the challenges of Flood Risk Management, Fresh Water and Spatial Adaptation.

The aim: by 2050, everyone behind the dikes will have the basic level of protection against flooding.

Example of storm surge defences

Prepare in good time for the end of the operational lifespan of the storm surge defences (second half of the 21st century): what are the options?

Example of dike upgrades

Continue with dike upgrades throughout the country and earmark room along all major waters for future upgrades.

Example of offshore sand replenishment

Continue with offshore sand replenishment and ensure that sand remains available for the future.
